Looney tuned...Sand pig to HogZilla.
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:13:03 PM »
It’s a disease, I started with the stock 650 and that was good for 3 months on the trails and a month in the dunes. I got stomped by a punk on a 450 running the drags in Oceano(he was pretty well equipped) but it still chapped me. So the orders started. 15 tooth front, all the mods from OMR and an open air filter with k&n. The paddle tires in 22” trim on blue labels. Now I was scooting... or so I thought. A Polaris rzr 900 took me to town in the whoops on our way back to camp. The section of whoops are about 1 mile long and pretty constant, so at speed you can find a pace and run them out at top speed. Now the rev limiter hit. So on to a limitless cdi. Now I’m fast but I can feel being held back in the exhaust. I had planed slowly working into the big mods (I was hovering over just an end cap) well hell it was a good week at work and I have a troop of family and friend heading to Pismo for Thanksgiving. So now comes the GOODS!!! A phone call to looney and I’m pacing, it comes in and I’m swamped at work. I take a look in the box and know the pound of extra weight is worth the sexiness.
The instal was more than I had anticipated (I’ve got pics to share) the trimming of the frame was only slightly more painful than I was prepared for. Over two late nights I cut painted and test fit the twin pipes along with moving the regulator and starter relay. Once it was in loose I snatched out the carb to install the included needle and main (being skeptical of the 200 main) I was playing in the 170/175 range on the beach. Once in and tight  I had to wait on the filter and outerwear (looney had to order one in) it’s been a while sense they put together a kit for a DS. So waiting for a run I fired it up several times and let it sing BASS!!! No ride though... to much damn silt at my shop. The filter came in and I modded it to accept the balance tube and warmed it up, WHOA, what a ride (there settings were spot on for start up) Seat of the pants run was so much more of a bike. Power; tone, sexy, FAST, and QUICK. Now I’m not shy of speed but my yard got real small real fast.
Thanksgiving is sure to be fun. I’ve got my jets tools and stock sprocket just in case I made up that much grunt. I can’t wait to stretch the pig out. It really is a whole new HogZilla.
But what’s next??? A week in the dunes tuning and spraying sand.

Sounds like you need to get a 730 or 800 Big bore kit with a bigger carb! You'll have more power between your legs than before! I was kinda feeling the same way you were when I get beat by those dang 450s, I'm looking at doing an FZ-07 motor swap into the DS, should be a fun project.

Once you get started you can't stop.  Check out my video of my 770cc first fire.  This thing pulls like a freight train - you arms are sore at the end of the day from hanging on.

Here is the link:

I would love too see a couple of pics of the cuts you had to make for the Looney tunes and here what they sound like.  I am just about to pull the 770cc power plant out and put it in a 2006 DS I just purchased a couple of weeks ago.

I took time tonight to run a 2.5 mile loop through the woods around my shop. It’s a great step up, but I can tell I’m already going to be looking for that next fix.  The big bore/ stroker is calling. My girlfriend will take the bike from me time to time, so I’m looking for a frame or beat bike to turn into a quad rocket. I look forward to a currently dated build. Home builders are so much more skilled than when the ds was in its hay day. I’m confident that the current setup will be fun. (more like I expected from the start)

I tried to post pics but I sized them down to a point that they were crap and they still wouldn’t load. Any advise with an iPhone and taptalk???

Mrds650 I saw your video super early on my hunt for knowledge. It sounds great. I’d like to go head to head and see where I stand against stock, and the level you are at.

Bigfun421 - Night and day difference.  This 2006 I just picked up is bone stock.  Took it for a rip around the block the other day and thought - Whats wrong with this thing - maybe the brakes are stuck on - nope that just the way it is - LOL.  No compassion  I am so used to ridding and getting on the throttle and just waiting for the front end to come up and not stop until I get off the gas.

Nice to see somebody with the same excitement/enthusiasm that most of the rest of us got to partake in back in the day. It is fun, it is expensive, and life will happen to move you on to other endeavors. Enjoy it while you can. Life is fast, live it faster!

FOR SURE. I am having such a good time in the sand. My beautiful girlfriend and daughter are right there with me. They keep up in a pumped up rzr 900xp. We are living it as fast as we can. That is the only way to balance work and school. Thanks for all the info ACE.

MRDS650, here are a few pics. The first is the lower shock bracket that there was never any mention of needing to trim. The second picture is of the upper which they sent a template of how to trim but it was a quarter inch too short. As you can see the left-hand side still need some more trimming to prevent a rattle.

Well, the trip to the dunes was a hoot. The fast flowing 3-4 gear carving was awesome (huge torque down low). But I fear my top end speed and overrev are gone. I’m going to work on getting my stock filter mount back in without the box. Probably cutting the first subframe crossmember out...

Checked out your videos of the 770 ds looks and sounds great but why do you need all the extra power when you drive like my grandmother... ha ha ha just messing with you but it would be nice to see it topped out !!

Welp, there is no cutting that will get the stock filter even close. I was thinking some dom tube with just the right shape. But now I’m back on the hunt for a carb that can flow enough laminar air to get my top end back.
