timeing and gapping...
« on: May 01, 2017, 10:43:18 AM »
OK started digging in to my pig  trying to dig down to check my popper valves. While I was digging in  I pulled the Buckets out and noticed the buckets had not shims at all in there.... IS this normal? I have not checked gapping yet but I figured I would stop there as I would start asking questions first to those who have torn these apart a lot more than me. still running low pressure so before I went much further I wanted to get some advice on things to look for or some phone numbers so I can ask questions.....

Hey

The shim is in the top side of the bucket, you have to pry it out most of the time

A good blast of compressed air will normally unseat the shims from the bucket. May I ask why you are taking out the shims if you haven't measured the gaps yet?
I'd jot down my gaps and if anything needed adjusted then measure the shims to see if you can just swap them around.

Hey Ace,
I was trying to get a glance at the Poppers first as I have low compression on the motor, thinking Bent or Carbonizing might be a problem, so I was looking around as I was breaking things down and like I said I seen NO shims at all in the buckets. Since I seen that I was figuring I should look at gaps thinking they might be out far enough to cause a slight leak on compression. but then again I might be wrong so I came here for advice...

The DS has a decompression lever on the end of the exhaust cam  so you can not do a normal compression check with a gauge. you must do a leak down test. Find a shop manual and it will guide you though it.
